Green For A Cleaner Life
Home Alternatives

Solar and wind are great alternative power sources, but they're not the only ones, and most
people don't know where to start. Learn more about renewable energy at
Off The Grid!

Even if you can't afford alternative energy systems for your home, there are other things you
can do. Look for products with the
Energy Star label. These products will help your home
use power more efficiently and save you money. They may even qualify for tax credits or
rebates.
Batteries

Rechargeable batteries are a great alternative to the traditional batteries we use, and when
you can no longer use them, they can be recycled. The regular non-rechargeable batteries
usually are not recycled. They end up in local landfills, or hazardous waste landfills, if
collected through household battery collection programs.

Ni-Cd (Nickel Cadmium) batteries are the older type of rechargeable batteries. They are
more affordable, but can't be used as many times as the newer Ni-MH (Nickel Metal
Hydride) batteries. Ni-Cd batteries also suffer from the memory effect, if they are not fully
discharged before recharging, they will end up needing to be recharged sooner, and
sooner. NI-MH batteries to not suffer from the memory effect, and tend to last for twice as
many uses as Ni-Cd batteries.
